Penalties
Penalties for driving without insurance in Virginia
Uninsured vehicle owners will have their driving and vehicle registration privileges suspended. To be reinstated, you must pay a $600 non-compliance fee, file a Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate (SR-22) with the DMV for three years, and pay a reinstatement fee if applicable, according to the Virginia DMV.

- Virginia raised its minimums for policies effective on or after January 1, 2025. For policies effective January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024, the minimums were $30,000, $60,000 and $20,000.
- Drivers should keep proof of insurance in their vehicle at all times.
- If liability coverage on a vehicle terminates or cancels during the registration period, you must reinsure the vehicle, deactivate your license plates, or permanently surrender them to the DMV.
- The DMV partners with insurers to electronically verify liability insurance on Virginia registered vehicles. If no insurance is found for a vehicle, the owner must provide policy information to the DMV.
- Eligible vehicle owners may enter a Payment Plan Program to pay the statutory fee over time.
