Penalties

Penalties for driving without insurance in Vermont

The Vermont DMV says it is illegal to operate a vehicle that is not covered by the minimum liability insurance in 23 V.S.A. 800. A person required to file Financial Responsibility Insurance with the DMV must keep it on file for a minimum of three years, and driving privileges are not reinstated until valid coverage is on file. The DMV accepts only an SR-22 certificate from an insurance company.
