Penalties
Penalties for driving without insurance in Mississippi
The Insurance Department says the initial penalty for failing to maintain an insurance card is $1,000 and suspension of driving privileges for one year or until the vehicle owner shows proof of insurance. The Department of Public Safety says that in 2018 the penalty for not having insurance changed from a civil violation to a criminal offense, and uninsured drivers may face a criminal misdemeanor citation. - Mississippi's compulsory liability law took effect January 1, 2001 (House Bill 621), and the minimums rose to 25/50/25 on January 1, 2006. Insurance cards may be paper or electronic since July 1, 2013.
- The Compulsory Liability Law is enforced by the Department of Public Safety, Safety Responsibility Division: 601-987-1255.
- A law enforcement officer cannot stop you solely to check for an insurance card, but can ask for proof of insurance during a stop for any other statutory violation.
- Mississippi has used a statewide electronic insurance verification system since September 2017, according to the Department of Public Safety.
