- The Division's bulletin tells insurers to bring bodily injury, property damage, uninsured and underinsured motorist limits up to the new financial responsibility limits, with a pro-rata premium adjustment for policies that expire on or before June 30, 2026.

Penalties
Penalties for driving without insurance in Massachusetts
Under M.G.L. c. 90, section 34J, operating a motor vehicle without the required liability policy, bond or deposit is punishable by a fine of $500 to $5,000, imprisonment for up to one year in a house of correction, or both. Someone with no prior determination of responsibility or conviction for the offense is subject to a fine of not more than $500. Confirm license and registration consequences with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Other things to know in Massachusetts
- The Division of Insurance announced new minimum limits for policies written or renewing on or after July 1, 2025. Older publications still show the previous limits of $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident and $5,000 for property damage, which are out of date.
- Personal injury protection remains at $8,000 per person.
- Compulsory coverage is a minimum. Your policy may include optional coverages, and each coverage has its own limits.
