Penalties
Penalties for driving without insurance in Maryland
The MVA says insurance violation penalties are set by law and based on how long the vehicle was uninsured. Unpaid penalties may result in registration suspension, vehicle flags and compounding fees, and are eventually referred to the Central Collections Unit, where an additional 17% is added. If you cancel insurance and do not replace it, return your license plates to stop penalties.
Good to know
Other things to know in Maryland
- Maryland law requires every registered vehicle to have continuous auto insurance at all times, even if the vehicle is not being driven.
- Your insurance must match the vehicle information on file with the MVA, and insurers report coverage to the MVA electronically. If the MVA shows a problem and your insurance is active, contact your insurer and ask it to correct the record (an FR-19 filing).
- Only insurance companies licensed and approved to do business in Maryland may insure vehicles registered there.
- If your policy was canceled or you were denied coverage by two or more insurers, you may be eligible for coverage through Maryland Auto Insurance, which the MVA does not manage.
