Penalties for driving without insurance in Louisiana
The Department of Insurance says you may face considerable fines for knowingly operating a vehicle without insurance, being in an accident without insurance, and falsely claiming to have insurance, and that there are penalties for lack of proof or letting insurance lapse. Driving privileges can be suspended by impounding the vehicle, revoking registration or canceling the plate. After an accident without liability insurance, your license may be suspended and registration revoked for 180 days. Falsely claiming insurance can mean license revocation for 12 to 18 months.

- In general, you must be considered at least 50% at fault for your liability coverage to pay.

- A lender may require comprehensive and collision coverage until the vehicle is paid for.
- Louisiana does not have provisions that restrict mid-term cancellations of auto policies, according to the Department.
