Coastal wind and hail coverage can be separate
- Standard homeowners policies typically exclude flood. Flood coverage is bought separately, for example through the National Flood Insurance Program.
- The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1971 and provides wind and hail coverage in a designated coastal catastrophe area. That area includes the 14 first-tier coastal counties and part of Harris County.
- To qualify for TWIA, a property must be in the designated area and the applicant must have been denied coverage by at least one private insurer writing windstorm coverage there. TWIA is regulated by the Texas Department of Insurance.
