Notices
What to know in Montana.
- Under Montana law, motorists stopped for a traffic violation or involved in a collision must show proof of insurance to law enforcement, in addition to their driver license and vehicle registration.
- The Motor Vehicle Division says that if a vehicle is registered, it must have minimum liability insurance on it, even if the vehicle is not being used.
- The minimum limits are set in section 61-6-103 of the Montana Code. Property damage limits were raised by a 2019 law, and some older materials show lower numbers.
- Montana Code 33-23-201 requires liability policies to include uninsured motorist coverage, with the named insured able to reject it. The coverage need not be included in a renewal if the insured rejected it on an earlier policy with the same insurer, unless the insured asks for it in writing.
