If you drive without required coverage

The MVA says insurance violation penalties are set by law and based on how long the vehicle was uninsured. Unpaid penalties may result in registration suspension, vehicle flags and compounding fees, and are eventually referred to the Central Collections Unit, where an additional 17% is added. If you cancel insurance and do not replace it, return your license plates to stop penalties.

Notices

What to know in Maryland.

  • Maryland law requires every registered vehicle to have continuous auto insurance at all times, even if the vehicle is not being driven.
  • Your insurance must match the vehicle information on file with the MVA, and insurers report coverage to the MVA electronically. If the MVA shows a problem and your insurance is active, contact your insurer and ask it to correct the record (an FR-19 filing).
  • Only insurance companies licensed and approved to do business in Maryland may insure vehicles registered there.
  • If your policy was canceled or you were denied coverage by two or more insurers, you may be eligible for coverage through Maryland Auto Insurance, which the MVA does not manage.
  • MVA contact center: 410-768-7000.
  • The uninsured motorist and PIP figures come from Maryland Auto Insurance (MAIF), a state-created insurer, because the MVA pages list only the liability minimums. Confirm them with the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Start with the Maryland Insurance Administration

  • Standard homeowners policies typically exclude flood. Flood coverage is bought separately, including through the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • The Maryland Insurance Administration publishes a flood insurance page and is the state authority for questions about insurers, agents and complaints.

Maryland Health Connection (state-based marketplace)
