If you drive without required coverage
The Department of Insurance says you may face considerable fines for knowingly operating a vehicle without insurance, being in an accident without insurance, and falsely claiming to have insurance, and that there are penalties for lack of proof or letting insurance lapse. Driving privileges can be suspended by impounding the vehicle, revoking registration or canceling the plate. After an accident without liability insurance, your license may be suspended and registration revoked for 180 days. Falsely claiming insurance can mean license revocation for 12 to 18 months.
Notices
What to know in Louisiana.
- Louisiana's "No Pay, No Play" law prohibits uninsured motorists from collecting the first $25,000 in property damage and the first $15,000 in personal injuries, regardless of who causes the accident. Some other websites show different amounts; this page follows the Department's March 2026 guide.
- Buying economic-only uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may allow you to waive your right to claim pain and suffering under that law.
- In general, you must be considered at least 50% at fault for your liability coverage to pay.
- If you cannot get coverage in the voluntary market, you can seek it through the Louisiana Automobile Insurance Plan: (866) 989-9902.
- A lender may require comprehensive and collision coverage until the vehicle is paid for.
- Louisiana does not have provisions that restrict mid-term cancellations of auto policies, according to the Department.
