If you drive without required coverage
Under Idaho Code 49-1232, failing to carry proof of liability insurance is an infraction punishable by a $75 fine for a first violation. A second or later conviction within five years is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in the county jail, or both. Separately, the Idaho Transportation Department says vehicle owners without insurance for two consecutive months get a warning and 30 days to provide proof or obtain an exemption before the registration is suspended, with a $75 reinstatement fee.

- Idaho's "Drive Insured" program uses an online insurance verification system to make sure registered vehicles have coverage. A 2019 law requires registered owners to have vehicle insurance or the DMV will suspend the vehicle registration.

- Idaho Code 41-2502 requires insurers to include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in liability policies.
