If you drive without required coverage

The Delaware DMV says failure to maintain proper insurance may result in fines and registration suspension. License plates must be surrendered to the DMV before cancelling insurance on any vehicle with an active registration.

What to know in Delaware.

  • The insurance identification card must be produced on request of a police officer or any other party involved in an accident with the insured.
  • Insurance from other states is not accepted to title and register vehicles in Delaware.
  • The DMV audits vehicles for insurance compliance. Tags are returned at no charge if proper insurance is provided and the registration has not expired.
